The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist plays a critical role in maintaining health and safety standards throughout all Vets Plus facilities. This position will work closely with all departments to minimize risks, ensure a healthy working environment and adhere to all health and safety regulations. Reporting to the COO, the EHS Specialist will provide support on daily EHS tasks and program management and may be assigned projects to manage and complete that support EHS initiatives.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with regulated policies and procedures (OSHA and EPA) on both the Federal and State (Wisconsin) levels.
- Drive a safety mindset by developing relationships with team members and encouraging safe behaviors and an awareness of safe work practices.
- Conduct and update environmental and safety risk assessments, aspects and impacts. Help identify and eliminate risks related to all jobs, our work environment, and equipment utilized.
- Assist with the development and implementation of EHS initiatives that create a systematic approach to managing waste, complying with environmental regulations, or reducing the company’s carbon footprint and promote employee participation and accountability.
- Work to build out components of our EHS program, developing training, processes and policies related to these tools to ensure sustainability. Collaborate with operations team in performing job safety analysis and risk assessments on critical job tasks – provide feedback on safety issues and process changes; document and follow-up on action items.
- Lead incident investigations, conduct root cause analysis, and present findings.
- Complete regulatory reporting, maintain OSHA logs, develop and maintain written plans for OSHA required areas.
- Work closely with Human Resources to conduct new hire orientation safety training, manage injury claims and support return to work programs.
- Create, update and present monthly and annual trainings.
- Lead Safety Committee meetings and facility walkthroughs.
- Manage PPE program including respirator fit and audiometric testing.
- Participate in 3rd party audits and act as a liaison between management and external agencies related to role.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, or other related field at an accredited college/university required.
- 1-3 years of experience in an EHS role required; food industry experience highly preferred.
- Understanding of federal, state and city EHS regulations including OSHA.
- OSHA 30-hour certification to be completed within 6-months of hire.
- 1st Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
- Certification as a CSP (Certified Safety Professional), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or similar form of licensure desired.
